This course provides the theory and clinical experience needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, healthcare delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in various healthcare settings and may be eligible for national certification as Phlebotomy Technicians. The course may include a clinical component.

Times: Mondays and Wednesdays, 5 pm - 9 pm, and online assignments
 
Total Hours: 225 Hours
 
Location: Building 17, Room 107
 
Credential: American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) Certification
 
Cost: Tuition - $275.80, Books approximately $80.00, Uniforms approximately $30.00. 
 
Mandatory Orientation: January 7, 2026, at 5:00 pm, Building 17, Room 107
 
The last day to register, pay tuition, provide, and meet eligibility documentation is January 5, 2026.
 
Books & Supplies REQUIRED:
  • Book: Phlebotomy for the Healthcare Professional by Helen C. Maxwell ISBN 978-194384223-0
  • Uniforms: Navy blue Scrub top and bottom, white shoes

The following items are due prior to orientation:

Immunization record, high school transcript/diploma, driver's license, and health history (physical exam). Please, either deliver the following documents to the Program Director, Sarah Jornigan, office located in building 17, Room 103D, upload during registration, or email to sjjornigan97@go.mcdowelltech.edu. Students who do not present the required documentation will not be enrolled in the class.

Immunizations required to be completed prior to orientation: Influenza vaccine for the current year, Tuberculin skin test (PPD), Hepatitis B series or titer results, MMR series or titer results, varicella vaccine or titer results, COVID vaccine or completion of exemption forms based on facility requirements. CPR will be scheduled during the course; a 4-hour American Heart Association BLS and CPR with first aid is required. 

Individuals who complete the registration will receive contact from the program director requesting the above information and verifying eligibility. Once verified, the continuing education department will send a confirmation email or registration information receipt. **Any student who is not successfully onboarded by the clinical agency by the deadline will NOT be permitted to go to clinical and will be withdrawn from the course. A student may register and enroll in the Phlebotomy Program a maximum of three separate semesters. An appeal may be requested for the fourth entry through the Program Director.

P.S. Students should plan to bring a credit/debit card to orientation and be prepared to pay $110.00 to a third-party vendor to complete a criminal background check, drug screen, and immunization tracking. If you have your own laptop, you may bring that with you to orientation.
