Social and Human Services

Program Overview

The Social and Human Services curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and behavioral health services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas.

Coursework includes the development of professional knowledge, skills, and values in human services. Opportunities for experiential learning allow students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Graduates should qualify for positions in government, private, and nonprofit social and human services agencies. Graduates may choose to transfer and continue their education at a variety of colleges and universities.

Curriculum

The Social and Human Services program combines general education courses, such as English, Math or Biology, Communication, Humanities, Psychology, and Sociology, with core Human Services courses. Students may also take courses in related subject areas, such as Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health, and Addiction and Recovery.

Students can earn an Applied Associate in Science (A.A.S.) degree with options for both career and transfer tracks.

Mission Statement

The Social and Human Services Program prepares compassionate, ethical, and culturally competent professionals dedicated to empowering individuals, families, and communities. Rooted in empathy, integrity, and social justice, the program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed for effective human service practice.

Students build critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making abilities while mastering communication and interpersonal skills that foster trust, advocacy, and collaboration. The program emphasizes adaptability, professionalism, and the responsible use of technology across diverse work settings, from offices and courts to homes and community agencies.

Students also learn to practice self-care, emotional regulation, and cultural sensitivity, maintaining professionalism in demanding situations. Graduates emerge as reflective practitioners, organized, flexible, and resilient with a commitment to ethical service and meaningful impact in the lives of others.

The Social and Human Services Program is guided by the following core values:

  • Empathy and Respect: Honoring the dignity and unique experiences of every individual.
