McDowell Technical Community College is proud to announce that Dr. Brandon Hensley, Dean of Career and Technical Education, has been named the 2026 Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Region II Postsecondary Professional of the Year.

The regional award recognizes outstanding career and technical education professionals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment to preparing students for success in the workforce and beyond.

“To be recognized by a group of my peers and colleagues in the CTE profession is truly an honor,” Hensley said. “I am humbled to be the recipient of the 2026 ACTE Region II Postsecondary Professional of the Year.”

Hensley’s recognition reflects his commitment to expanding high-quality career and technical education opportunities for students at McDowell Tech and throughout the community. Through partnerships with K–12 education, business and industry, and community organizations, he has helped strengthen pathways that connect students with education, credentials, careers, and economic opportunity.

In addition to his leadership at McDowell Tech, Hensley is serving as President-Elect of the North Carolina chapter of ACTE, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing career and technical education across the state.

“Brandon’s recognition is incredibly well deserved and speaks to the quality of leadership he provides our students, faculty, and community,” said Dr. JW Kelley, President of McDowell Technical Community College. “His work exemplifies what career and technical education is intended to accomplish—connecting students with meaningful educational opportunities that lead to strong careers while meeting the workforce needs of our region.”

The ACTE Region II Postsecondary Professional of the Year recognition also highlights the important role McDowell Tech’s CTE programs play in supporting the workforce and economic vitality of McDowell County and Western North Carolina.

“We are extremely proud of Brandon and the impact of his leadership,” said Dr. Valerie Dobson, Vice President of Academics and Student Services and Chief Academic Officer. “This award is especially meaningful because it comes from his peers in the CTE profession. Brandon understands that strong CTE programs are built around students, quality instruction, and meaningful partnerships with employers and our K–12 partners. His leadership continues to create opportunities for students to find where they belong, develop valuable skills, and build a pathway toward a successful future.”

ACTE is one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to advancing career and technical education and supporting professionals who prepare students for high-skill, high-demand careers. Region II represents CTE professionals throughout the southeastern United States.
