McDowell Tech became an independent institution in 1967, having been a satellite of what is not AB Tech for three years prior to that time. In celebration of that founding, we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary during the 2017-2018 academic year! These photos represent some of our oldest historical photos, mostly from the first 30 years of our 50 year history.

I'm not one of those that dreams about buildings cuz we can build buildings big deal is people just the connections are faculty and staff make with our students neighbors the community on a day-to-day basis that makes McDowell Tech who it is that's the heart of who we are connections connections connections trying to help folks get to where they want to one student at a time McDowell Tech has caused me to grow academically and socially opportunity to learn a lot about myself and about relationships and family McDowell Tech help improve my Epic back in the early mid sixties campus was opened up in a storefront that 64 as a satellite of VTech three years later McDowell had their own board that have their own budget so from 67 to 2017 it's been 50 years were excited about the possibilities of another I think what's really important to the culture of the school 35 almost 40% of the people who live in McDowell County work in industry in manufacturing part of the community is a really needs to be for the heart of the college's as well and so we spend an awful lot of time looking at working with trying to prepare people for work in industry I'm so much in 50 years are Industries change the requirements for getting entry level jobs and progressing has changed and we're trying to change with so much of what we do isn't what help whether it's on the curriculum side credit or non-credit through EMT paramedic training we wanted to send you later Hospital simulating real life experiences and efficient effective call Sunrise in 1998 Del Tech collaborated with Cleveland Community College in Shelby and I see thermal Community College to create the Foothills nursing home social 25 tooth students from each of the three areas come together create class of nurses or any one of the three back then couldn't have has self-sustaining nursing program came together and have a very very successful nursing program but I'm excited about it really goes to the heart again if what we do collaborating to build something bigger than what we can do ourselves another collaboration that really was a par the workforce pipeline committee was our latest building the universal Advanced manufacturing center lot of people came together at the county the city to funding agents are friends and Manufacturing who donated time and money and to build something much better than any one of us could ever dream of Mcdowell Tech has allowed me to complete one semester of college so when I go on to continue my education that's one semester last that I have to do but I'll check will help me further my education and help me get to my College transfer to where I can go to a university someday here at the tech helping students get dual-credit but high school and college some of the time Sunday either leave their fourth or fifth year of high school they have an associate degree which speaks them up to go on to a 4-year school if that's what they choose prepares them for all the work if that's what that cheese so it really gets gets young people where they want to go just a couple years faster and making me put my son never too late to further your education and better your future was passed by the system's North Carolina last year the big chunk of our bonus going for our cosmetic Arts programs I want not only our students with the clients they the feel like they're going into a salon or Spa another exciting part about the Cosmetic building that we're going to build is a new program Barbara there's no a barber program between Winston-Salem Charlotte and Knoxville Tennessee huge gap but every town has at least one Barber they're having to travel they're having to move their families or be away from their families while there that training we want all for that here right in the heart of Western North Carolina and I think that's going to be a huge program for us the tech effect you make friends meditrek allows me to the great education for a low price we've been here for 50 years changing lives and we're all looking forward to 50 more years of changing lives here in McDowell County discover the difference at McDowell Technical Community school students who wish to gain early college credits throughout the community for people who wish to continue their high school education through the GED free GED prep classes computer literacy training and personal enrichment programs are offered through hrd and a b e v a human resource development and adult basic education working hand-in-hand with these programs the careers provides an array of services designed to assist area residents in shock preparation and college admissions the career center provides career and personal counseling free tutoring for any of the Dell tech student request does assistance and directs all special services for our handicapped student population this includes a free comprehensive program of services for students with learning disabilities the career center is also the site for placement testing this test is required for new students entering into our vocational-technical and College transfer programs the placement test is administered on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 and on Wednesday morning sitting on the test I said you don't need an appointment the placement test is administered as an academic advising tool not an admission standard and since McDowell Tech is an Open Door institution set any high school graduate for anyone who is 18 years of age or older this just helps ensure your success and your chosen program of study call Child Care Center place a dual role on the mtcc campus Hands-On educational training center for our students it is also a licensed daycare center supporting the child care needs of many mtcc students student population Stan's a wide age range for high school students to senior citizens many Community residents are experiencing the benefits to be gained from attending McDowell to the student services department is responsible for student admissions counseling services and our Student Government Association look at your schedule right here can save this you know about the days and times is Melissa Thompson I've been involved in the student government ever since coming to McDowell Tech on the current year Student Government Association president what do a lot of important things we sponsor food events each quarter we have done a Black History Month Awareness Day Badu Earth Day awareness day and we maintain the pool and air hockey tables here on campus we have to do a lot of fun things like singing telegrams around Valentine's Day somersplash in Spring Fling we do a lot of important things in our campus when you can decide to come to McDowell Tech come join the STA another important aspect of student services is our financial aid department you guys are surprised to find out that they qualify for some form of financial assistance either through loan which don't have to be paid back if you had that you completed toward the State Board Transformers hours certain dragon have that works better the continuing education department provides in a store special interest classes and specialized industry training course offerings include arts and crafts languages music and recreational classes these are offered at a minimum cost industry training as a service we provide to assist in the growth and development of the McDowell Will County Workforce Services include certification recertification EMT and fire school training back to Industry training computer software training technology training the Small Business Center headed special glasses specifically designed to enhance the workplace the mtcc library is conveniently located in the main administration building just above the student Commons the library open to the public provides a wide variety of texts and periodicals specifically designed to support the Vocational Technical and College transfer programs offered on our campus many students profit from the services provided in the air ACC learning lab true course is offered in the lab students are able to improve their English math and reading skills this enables them to form a better foundation for the next step beginning their academic program of study and a vocational Technical College transfer track as you can see our learning lab provides an open relaxed atmosphere where students can regain their necessary academic skills in a non-threatening environment will strengthen McDowell tech license signs with just over 800 students McDowell tech classes are small enough to provide a great student instructor ratio having the opportunity to interact with their instructors if mtcc student and academic and job training Edge that just can't be found in larger institutions and the academic success of our students is proven by their competitive academic standing as compared with students from even know Carolina's four-year institutions in addition to the academic preparation you will receive the cost of a community college education is only a fraction of what you would expect to pay at a four-year college or
