President’s Council Minutes

The President’s Council met on November 28, 2017 at 2:00pm in the boardroom, Dogwood building.

Present: Dr. Jim Benton, Dr. Penny Cross, Madalyn Gaito, Ryan Garrison, Dr. Gossett, Bo Harmon, Michael Lavender, Brad Ledbetter, Kelly McFarland, Julie Padgett, Dr. Watts, Joan Weiler

President – Dr. Gossett

Provided an update on the new Cosmetology Building. The team has met with architects Holland and Hamrick to work out a rough layout. Looking at possible groundbreaking in September/October 2018.

Working with Golden Leaf Foundation for a small grant to pay for equipment for STEM programs.

The current status of the state budget is that revenues are down. It is very likely that we will be asked to hold back approximately $50,000.00 to revert back to the state. This is in addition to the $300,000.00 we did not receive in the current budget defined as “Management Flex”. For the short session the President’s Association will be working with legislators to abolish Management Flex and return to fully funding Community Colleges as one of several priorities.

Several faculty and staff members are serving on a committee looking at creating a trail system behind Universal. The McDowell Economic Development Association is working to build a shell building on the Universal property. This will be a “factory on spec” building that they hope to use to encourage a manufacturing company to locate on the property.

Continuing Education – Brad Ledbetter

They have received a grant for the Certified Production Technician (see attached) course. With the grant money we will be able to run one class but he would like to be able to develop it into a continuing class. The 6 week class will start in January. The goal is to work with local manufacturers to see if there is interest in helping to fund competency based training.

Developmental Studies & Quality Enhancement – Dr. Watts

Will be working on the STREAM event for 6th grade students at East Middle on Friday, Dec. 1 and at West Middle on Friday, Dec. 8. She has several students, faculty and staff assisting in this effort.

McDowell County Schools have students at Universal Monday-Thursday of this week and next week.

Enrollment Management – Julie Padgett

The SGA Angel Tree is up and located just outside the entrance to the library. Gifts are due back to Student Services on Dec. 12.

External Relations – Michael Lavender

The website is close to being ready. Hopes to have it up by the first of next week.

It will not include instructor sites; these have to be built on individual basis.

Grants – Dick Mauney

Technology – Elmer Macopson

 Meeting adjourned – 3pm

Respectfully submitted,

Madalyn Gaito
