Phi Theta Kappa International
Inducts New Members

ptk

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, the largest honor society for two-year colleges in the world, has inducted twenty McDowell Technical Community College students into membership through the organization’s local chapter. Chapter President Terra Fender welcomed these students into membership at ceremonies held in the Crane Resistoflex Auditorium on April 20, 2009.

Phi Theta Kappa has over 1200 chapters at two-year colleges in all 50 states, Canada, Germany and Japan. The McDowell Technical Community College chapter, Beta Zeta Lambda, has an outstanding record of achievement and service since its founding more than eleven years ago.

Phi Theta Kappa is one of two honor societies on the McDowell Tech campus, the other being National Technical Honor Society, which also inducted new members recently.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation only, based on prior academic achievement in college work. Eligible students choose to accept membership in the organization and whether to participate in various chapter activities. Opportunities abound throughout the year to participate in service, fellowship, or scholastic events, and members frequently compete for chapter and individual awards at the state and regional level.

“We are proud of the work our PTK students have engaged in throughout the years, from service projects like roadside clean-ups to food drives and charity fundraising,” said Dr. Bryan W. Wilson, President of McDowell Technical Community College. He commended Chapter Advisors Beverly Watts and Sherry Helton for their leadership assistance to Beta Zeta Lambda.

Honor Society members receive special recognition at graduation and their transcripts reflect membership in the society.
“This is a prestigious honor society,” said Wilson, “and these students and their families should be justifiably proud of their accomplishments. This is well-deserved recognition.”
