Hunter Appointed to Board

Carries on Family Tradition of Service to the College

Governor Mike Easley has appointed Nancy H. Hunter of Marion to a vacancy on the McDowell Technical Community College board created by the death of Mr. John Cook, her brother-in-law, earlier this year. Mr. Cook’s term would have expired June 30th of this year.

The Cook and Hunter families have been long-time friends and supporters of the college and both Mr. Cook and his mother, the late Lucy T. Hunter, served on the McDowell Tech Board prior to Mrs. Hunter’s appointment.

She was sworn in by Dr. Bryan W. Wilson, President of the College, during the board’s regular meeting in August.

Hunter graduated from Meredith College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and History. She completed additional graduate work in Sociology at Wake Forest University Graduate School from 1969-1970. In addition, she completed French language studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, France in 1967.

She has been the Director of Human Resources at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center in Morganton, NC since 1993. She was previously employed with Jackson & Associates, now the Jackson Group, as a Consultant/Trainer and Director of Survey Services. From 1985-1987, she was Director of Personnel at Grace Hospital in Morgaton and also served as Director of Personnel at Western Carolina Center from 1979-1985.

Hunter has served on the board of directors for several organizations, including Wachovia Bank Board, where she was Vice-Chair from 1990-2006. From 1989-1995 and 1997-2000, Hunter was also Chair and Vice-Chair of the McDowell Hospital Board of Directors. Currently, she serves on the board for the Morganton branch of the NC State Employees Credit Union.

Due to her outstanding public service, Hunter received a special Award for Excellence from the Secretary of the NC Department of Health and Human Services in 1984 and a Director’s Award for Excellence at Western Carolina Center in 1996. She was also the 2000 Burke County Employment Security Commission Employer of the Year.

She and her husband, the Honorable Judge Robert C. Hunter, are members of First Baptist Church in Marion. Judge Hunter sits on the NC Court of Appeals in Raleigh. They have two children: Megan Hunter Entriken, married to Matt Entriken; and Claire Alise Hunter.

Hunter’s term will expire in June, 2012.
